Customer success story
 - Modernized software for banks

Our Customer:
VÖB-Service GmbH

VÖB-Service GmbH is a subsidiary of the Association of German Public Banks and has established itself as an exclusive manufacturer of special solutions in the financial sector. The core competencies of the approximately 100 employees lie in banking and regulatory topics, for which VÖB-Service offers various products and services. One of these is the software safir-BeDarV (Paperless Loan Processing), which is used to apply for and process subsidy loans.

Project goal and challenges

The aim of the project was to modernize and future-proof further development of the existing application. The focus was on migrating to Java 8, improving maintainability and creating a stable basis for future extensions.

The application's existing technical architecture proved to be a special challenge. This architecture was based on a proprietary financial sector framework which was no longer being developed. As a result, there were numerous far-reaching technical dependencies that had to be analyzed, decoupled and gradually replaced by modern technical structures – all while maintaining stable, active operation of the application.

Solution and measures

cronn migrated the legacy application to the minimum required Java 8 in cooperation with CodeKeepers. As part of the solution an existing in-house development with a generic approach for the presentation of complex entry forms was transferred to modern web technologies. The previous user interface was completely migrated to a modern web architecture.

At the core of the implementation is an architecture which interprets the underlying set of rules and the structure of the forms during runtime, parses them and dynamically displays them in the interface. This made it possible to create a flexible and modern web application which enables form adjustments independent of release cycles, thereby significantly increasing the responsiveness to technical changes.

Customer benefit

The modernisation of the technical platform has created a basis for future-proof, long-term development of the application. At the same time, maintenance and adaptation costs were reduced and technological flexibility for future technical and regulatory requirements was improved. After fulfilling a maintenance contract, cronn passed on its know-how to the customer and handed over the solution for complete in-house operation.
