Customer success story
 - Save maintenance costs with predictive maintenance

Our Customer:
Hamburg Süd

The Hamburg Südamerikanische Dampfschifffahrts-Gesellschaft A/S & Co KG comprises six strong brands of international logistics service industry and is globally successful. Since the end of 2017 the Hamburg Süd Group is part of Maersk Line - the world market leader in the international container shipping.

  • 6,300 employees - about a quarter of them at sea.
  • 116 container ships
  • In total 583,000 containers (as of end 2016)

Starting Point

With around 583,000 containers, the shipping company Hamburg Süd brings its customers' cargo safely to its destination. The fleet includes reefer containers for the transport of temperature-sensitive cargo: inspections and maintenance must be carried out before each voyage to ensure that the containers are in technically flawless condition. Communication between the shipping company and the depots was primarily by e-mail. In addition to the storage of empty containers, depots offer other services such as inspection, cleaning and repair.

cronn reference quote hamburgsued

What we particularly liked about the cooperation with cronn was the direct contact with the developers. Thus our requirements were met individually and professionally - for us the project with cronn was a complete success.

— Martin Schöler, Head of Containertechnik at Hamburg Süd

Solution

Based on an existing PHP prototype, cronn developed a new web application. The cronn developers applied modern technologies - a spring boot application with React - which also allow operation in the cloud. A machine learning component determines which type of inspection is necessary from various factors, including measured values of the refrigerated container aggregate. The algorithm necessary for this predictive maintenance was extended by cronn during the implementation. Developer Hanno Fellmann describes one of the main use cases of the so-called depot app: "Based on the measured values, the system determines whether the transport was performed under optimal conditions. This is the basis for deciding what type of inspection must be carried out. By entering the container number in the depot app, depots also receive all information relevant to the container: for example, information about the necessary exchange of a certain spare part."

Since the end of 2017 the Hamburg Süd Group is part of Maersk - Maersk now also uses the depot app. cronn carried out the integration of the Maersk fleet into the app, developed interfaces and adapted the processes to the additional systems. This has significantly increased the usage figures of the app.

Improvements

Today - in addition to the respective departments at the company headquarters - depots worldwide use the web application.

"The depot app runs stably and makes changes quickly visible. In particular, it improves communication. Until now there has not been a way of providing container-specific information to the right service provider at the exact time it is required. As a result, the shipping company and its service providers benefit equally from effective communication and streamlined processes. For example, they are less dependent on e-mail and the containers are ready for use again more quickly.", Hanno concludes.

In the context of a maintenance contract, cronn continues to support the team "Equipment, Maintenance- & Repair" with a third level support of the depot app.
